COURSE LIST

Firefighter Basics (FFB)

The starting point for all new recruits or as a refresher program. This 16-hour program will combine three Essentials of Fire Fighting lessons. The lessons will enable students to predict probable fire behaviors and know the actions necessary to change or prevent these behaviors.

Required Materials: Pens/Pencils.

Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

This 16-hour program will focus on one Essentials of Firefighting lesson. The course describes PPE usage, donning, doffing, limitations, and troubleshooting. The lesson will enable students to be able to safely use, clean, recharge, inspect and store self-contained breathing apparatus.  The material concludes with some introductory search & rescue methods and practical applications to be better understand the SCBA uses and limitations.

Prerequisites: FFB

Required materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear or fire-resistant coveralls/safety boots/gloves, with SCBA rig and current hydro-tested SCBA bottle. Loaner rigs may be available to department members in need. Contact me for details.

Ropes & Knots/Ground Ladders (GLR)

Completion of this 16 hour awareness course will enable the student to identify, carry, raise, climb, inspect and maintain fire service ladders. The student will also be able to identify and properly knot, use and maintain various types of rope used in the fire service. 

Prerequisites: FFB, SCBA

Required Materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear.

Pump Operations & Maintenance (POM)

This 16 hour awareness course will cover the basic fire apparatus and fire pump history, how a pump works, different pump configurations like single stage, dual stage, and portable and where they are used in the fire service. We will discuss pump operations as it relates to the apparatus, how to use the relief valve, discuss the many gauges on the pump panel, and how to draft from different water sources like, porta-tank, creeks, and ponds, as well as the strategies of pumping from a hydrant system. Will touch on hose lays, and nozzle differences and applications. Students will be shown how to use foam either with onboard or inline applicators. This course consists of both theory and practical work environments. 

Prerequisites: FFB

Required materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear or fire-resistant coveralls/safety boots/gloves, with appropriate eye PPE.

Forcible Entry/Structural Search & Rescue (SSR)

After completing this 16-hour course, the students will develop an understanding of the tools and time needed for different entry methods, allowing them to minimize property damage when  not needed, and maximize force applied for situations warranting a quick and efficient force. The student shall also be able to demonstrate practices for firefighter survival during interior operations, describe search and rescue operations, describe MAYDAY protocols, evacuation, and the basics of rapid intervention operations.

Prerequisites: FFB, SCBA, GLR

Required Materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear with SCBA rig and 2 current hydro-tested SCBA bottle.

Public Education (PubEd)

Through a combination of interactive classroom sessions, group work, and hands-on training, students will learn how to deliver meaningful and effective public education activities. Whether it's a Fire Station Open House during Fire Prevention Week, or groups of seniors or children, students will understand how to tailor presentations, activities and events for maximum impact, using the resources available within their department and community. By the end of the course, students will be able to: Identify the most pressing fire and life safety risks in their community, understand the key safety messages they will need for various audiences, and use engaging, effective presentation techniques to deliver their message. Students will also receive Saskatchewan-specific public education tools and resources to help them effectively engage  audiences, and learn how to tap into no-cost resources.

Prerequisites: FFB or proof of equivalent training in a member department.

Required Material: Notepad and pen, plus a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Vehicle Fire (VFF)

This program consists of a theoretical and practical application. The program will enable students to identify and describe dangers associated with vehicle fires. Students will identify and explain the elements of vehicle fire suppression strategy, describe the major dangers of vehicle fires, understand the importance of strategy and tactical team operations, and understand the possible indications of deliberate fires. Students will participate in hands-on vehicle firefighting, as well as classroom activities. 

Required Materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear, under 10 years old, with SCBA rig and 2 current hydro-tested SCBA bottles.

Prerequisites: FFB, SCBA

Live Fire Basic (LFB)

This program will introduce beginner fire fighters to live fire. They will experience the heat and smoke of a real fire in a controlled environment. 

Required Materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear, under 10 years old, with SCBA rig and 2 current hydro-tested SCBA bottles.

Prerequisites: FFB, SCBA, GLR, SSR

Fire Service Safety Inspections (FSSI)

This course encourages fire safety visitations and evaluations of small community facilities and will include the rationale for inspections, authority under the Fire Prevention Act 1992, building classification, inspection & maintenance, emergency planning, calculation of occupant load (based on net floor space & exits), common hazards, orders and appeals, water supply & hydrant maintenance.

Prerequisites: FFB

Required Materials: Notepad and pen/pencils.

Vehicle Extrication (VEX)

This course is designed to teach rescue personnel involved in vehicle extrication the knowledge & skills necessary to perform a safe expedient rescue using a variety of tools and techniques. Students will gain the knowledge to assess the accident scene using the Incident Command System and have the opportunity to use extrication equipment in a safe, controlled situation under the guidance of a skilled instructor. The safe use, care & maintenance of hand and heavy hydraulic rescue tools will be covered. Students will learn to recognize existing and potential hazards at an accident scene and to stabilize the entire scene, as well as patient access, care and package for removal. Extrication can be dangerous - rescuers should be properly trained in order to protect themselves and work safely near accident victims. 

Safety equipment must be worn.

Prerequisites: None

Clothing: Full turnout gear, gloves, CSA footwear, helmets with face shield & safety glasses

Heavy Rescue (HR)

This program covers proper techniques and what tools to use in a complex rescue situation. This training is made to be used in regards to buses and tractor trailer related accidents. You will utilize skills and abilities from auto extrication and how to differently use all the tools at your disposal to stabilize and extricate victims.

Pre requisites: FFB and Auto Ex

Equipment: Full PPE or coveralls, Safety boots and safety glasses.

Rapid Intervention Team (RIT)

Rescuing our own is a high-intensity operational mandate that demands peak mental acuity and physical endurance in a highly chaotic environment. This course is built upon the mandatory training frameworks of NFPA 1400 and NFPA 1500. This advanced class shifts the traditional paradigm from a purely reactive rescue team to a proactive fire-ground asset. Rather than waiting for disaster to strike, students will learn to apply modern fire dynamics data from the UL Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) and building construction with real-world incident metrics from the Firefighter Mayday Survey to actively prevent Mayday situations before they occur. When prevention fails, members will execute rapid, disciplined rescue operations to safely extract downed firefighters from IDLH environments. 

Prerequisites: FFB, SCBA, GLR, SSR.

Required Materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear or fire-resistant coveralls/safety boots/gloves, with SCBA rig and 2 current hydro-tested SCBA bottles.

Dirty Searching - Structural Search and Rescue (DS)

This course is all about real world scenarios where nothing goes right! If regular searching strikes you as boring, this might be your course. It includes: Size-Up of buildings and estimating layouts), Body positioning (moving around in a tripod position, sounding the floor), Drags and Carries (webbing, hands on, etc), Cribs, Beds, Bunk Beds (searching them), Masking Up (with gloves on), Ground Ladders (for rescue, removing victims), Window Based Search- Isolate the room (dry runs, slow speed, coached), Oriented searches- 2 FF & 3 FF, Split Searches- 2 FF (dry runs), Window based- beyond the window (dry runs), “Hit and Split” Attack/Search (dry runs), Window Based Search- Isolate the room, Oriented searches- 2 FF & 3 FF, Split Searches- 2 FF, “Hit and Split” Attack/Search.

Prerequisites: FFB, SCBA, GLR, SSR

All students must have familiarity and competence with PPE and SCBA. There is no time dedicated to reviewing use of PPE and SCBA. Experience with ground ladders, and ropes and knots is beneficial. Students must deem themselves mentally and physically fit to participate in the activities. This course is designed to teach, reinforce, and even challenge the newest firefighter up to experienced firefighters.

Required Materials: Full Structural Firefighting gear or fire-resistant coveralls/safety boots/gloves, with SCBA rig and 2 current hydro-tested SCBA bottles.

Livestock Rescue (LR)

This course is designed provide the knowledge necessary to assess and handle livestock when coming upon them at an accident scene. Training is provided on animal behavior as well as how to handle them. Practical experience will be provided with live animals.

ICS 200

This two-day, in class course provides training on and resources for those who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the incident command system during an emergency response.

Prerequisites: ICS 100

Wildland Fire Supression

This 16-hour awareness course is designed for firefighters and individuals who directly and indirectly encounter and fight wildland fires in Saskatchewan. The in-class information provided will assist firefighters in identifying safe and informed strategies when fighting wildland fires. To prepare firefighters to respond safely and effectively while suppressing fires burning in wildland fuel types. Course content is delivered by lectures, hands-on classroom exercises. Course Content Includes: Basic Wildland Fire Behavior (OW-315); Incident Command System Orientation I-100 (IC-100); Fire line Organization/Jurisdictional Responsibilities; Fire line Safety; Fire line Communications, Fire line Equipment (including fire equipment demonstration); Fire Detection, Assessment and Reporting; Operations, Strategies and Tactics; and Preparedness and Planning.
